Historic Carthay Circle City Signs Reflect the Original Vision of J. Harvey McCarthy
Eli’s Tiles, a subdivision of Bradco Kitchens and Baths, was commissioned to redesign vandalized historic Carthay Circle city signs.
Los Angeles, CA (July 26, 2008) – Eli’s Tiles, a subdivision of Bradco Kitchens and Baths, was recently commissioned to redesign the damaged city signs of the historic city of Carthay Circle. Keeping true to the original vision of J. Harvey McCarthy, the signs reflect the Spanish Colonial Style of the houses and the 1920’s era.
Members representing the Carthay Circle neighborhood approached Eli’s Tiles to replace the damaged and cracked signs. The city is a uniquely planned development and the signs were well overdue to be replaced.
Breaking from the traditional grid patterns of Los Angeles, Carthay Circle streets are designed with an irregular street pattern and numerous walkways, thus encouraging pedestrian traffic so the entire community was easily accessible by foot. The distinctive homes of the district inspired them to contact Eli’s Tiles. Hand-crafted tiles reflect the uniqueness and quality of the homes that reside within Carthay Circle.
“When the city approached me, I was honored to be able to participate in this project” said Eli Shoef, the principal tile designer and namesake of Eli’s Tiles. As Carthay Circle is a historic district, the original vision of the city was reflected in the final design. “There are so many beautiful Spanish homes in the neighborhood. It was important that I delivered a quality design that fit both their budget as well as their vision.”
In keeping with the Spanish theme, they selected a color scheme and fonts that reflected the Spanish Baroque and Colonial styles that are found throughout the neighborhood. Then the tiles were handmade using environmentally friendly methods and materials.
